9 Day of Departure

Day 1 : Nairobi

You will be welcomed off your flight at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transferred to The Tamarind Tree Hotel for your overnight stay before getting out and about on your safari excursions. Take this opportunity to relax, recoup and recover from your flight. If time permits, we can arrange a visit to the Giraffe Centre or a game drive in Nairobi National Park. The city also offers a wide range of restaurants and craft shops to explore.

Kenya

Kenya - The grand old dame of African safaris, Kenya has been at the forefront of the industry for decades, and with iconic reserves such as Masai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and Tsavo, it has earned its place in safari royalty.
Kenya's wildlife is legendary, as is its hospitality, friendliness, and scenic beauty.  With the Great Rift Valley running through the country, Kenya is home to some stunning landscapes, with lakes, valleys and mountains adding to the beautiful plains of the Masai Mara.

To add to the spectacular wildlife, Kenya is one of the best countries to experience the local tribes and cultures, in particular the Masai and Samburu.

Kenyan roads are notoriously bad however, so the majority of safaris we recommend are fly-in options to the various parks.   The small group scheduled safaris all operate by road, so you would need to be prepared for what is called "the African massage".

The diversity of areas to visit in Kenya is astounding, with each game reserve offering something truly unique.   And to top it off, the country has a splendid coastline which invites some pure relaxation after spending time in the bush.

Nairobi

One of Africa’s major cities, Nairobi is the UN’s fourth “World Centre,” East Africa’s commercial, media and NGO hub, and a significant capital in its own right, with a population of approximately 3 to 4 million.

Little more than a century old, it has real claims to Western-style sophistication and displays enormous vitality and buzz.  On the surface the city accepts everyone with tolerance, and, in any downtown street, you can see a complete cross section of Kenyans, every variety of tourist, and migrants and refugees from many African countries.

If you plan to stay in Nairobi for any length of time, you’ll soon get the hang of balancing reasonable caution with a fairly relaxed attitude - thousands of visitors do it every year.  If you’re only here for a few days, you’re likely to find it a stimulating city.

Tamarind Tree Hotel

Ideally located just 5 kms southwest of the City within the spacious Carnivore grounds and its iconic Carnivore Restaurant, Tamarind Tree Hotel has easy access to Nairobi, its national park, and the country’s diverse attractions via the neighbouring Wilson Airport and Southern Bypass. The nearby Langata and Karen suburbs are among Nairobis liveliest and most popular with world-class shopping malls and excellent restaurants.

Day 2 - 3 : Laikipia

After a restful sleep and a delicious breakfast, your guide will drive for approximately five hours through flower farms and vibrant market towns. A delightful lunch will await you once you reach the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in the central Laikipia region. The dramatic and iconic snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya overlook this magnificent wildlife conservancy.

At Ol Pejeta Bush Camp, you can enjoy game drives in search of lion, buffalo, elephant, white rhino, and black rhino, and night drives add a whole new layer of excitement to your adventures. You will also visit the enclosure for endangered species and meet the world’s last two remaining northern white rhinos. The rangers will brief you on the remarkable work being done to save the species from extinction and protect other species here.

Ol Pejeta has eight tents, one of which is designed for families. All tents have an en suite bathroom, flushing toilets and hot running water.  After an exciting day’s adventure, as the evening approaches, you can join us all around the fireplace and relax with a cold drink while listening to the lion in the conservancy roar into the distance.

Laikipia

It is always gratifying when conservation efforts truly pay off, and the Laikipia Plateau is a place of much excitement!

Originally extensive farmland, a huge effort has succeeded in reclaiming much of the land between the slopes of the Aberdares and the snowy peaks of the mighty Mount Kenya.   The area now boasts the second highest concentration of wildlife in Kenya -  the Masai Mara topping the list!

Divided up into private concessions, the Laikipia Plateau consists of accommodation in tented camps, as well as lavish bush homes, allowing for a wonderful personalised experience.

Ol Pejeta Bush Camp

As with all Asilia camps, staying at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp allows guests to contribute to conservation. You can also get involved by helping with canine training or recording lion sightings for the research team. Seven spacious, eco-friendly tents are positioned along the Ewaso Ngiro River. The peaceful camp is staffed by our warm and hospitable team and is a great place for families, with activities like the Junior Ranger Programme to keep kids entertained and engaged.

Day 4 - 5 : Masai Mara

After a delightful breakfast, you will be transferred to the local airstrip for a flight to Rekero Camp in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Once you arrive, an Asilia guide will take you to Rekero Camp, perched above the Talek River, offering stunning vistas of a prime Great Migration crossing point. This charming camp is ideally located to enjoy the Masai Mara’s diverse wildlife year-round. It comprises nine classic and spacious safari tents overlooking the river, including two family tents. Each tent offers an en suite bathroom, flushing toilet, and hot-water shower.

During the day, watch the hippos splashing in the river from the lounge and deck. Twice-daily game drives are available, with an in-camp or a picnic breakfast to savour in the bush. To add variety to your experiences, an early morning hot-air balloon can be arranged at an additional cost. Witnessing the breathtaking wildlife from above is an unforgettable adventure.

Relish in a siesta after lunch, read a book, relax, and soak in the views from your tent or the camp’s deck area. Later, refuel with afternoon tea and cake before departing for an exciting afternoon drive accompanied by a selection of sundowner drinks. Upon returning, unwind around the campfire for pre-dinner drinks and a delicious meal.

Masai Mara

It is no surprise that the Masai Mara ranks up near the top of most famous game reserves in the world.   The land of the Mara is consistently covered with herds of antelope, interspersed with prides of lions, journeys of giraffe, dazzles of zebra, and almost every other collective animal noun you can think of.

The sightings are nothing short of fantastic, and it is definitely the park to visit to tick off your "wildlife of Africa" list.   The scenery of the park is similar to the open plains of the Serengeti, although the Mara is dotted with more trees, and the game viewing is equal to, or can be better than, its southerly sister.

Within the boundaries of the reserve, there are certain areas which can seem quite crowded with travellers, although there are places to escape from the crowds, and enjoy the Mara in some exclusivity.  Private concessions surround the Masai Mara, allowing more private safari experiences, and additional activities.

The Masai Mara is easily accessed from Nairobi, with a number of scheduled flights operated each morning and afternoon.   It can also be reached by road, but be prepared that it can be quite a bumpy 6 hour drive, with sections being particularly broken up.

Rekero Camp

When it comes to witnessing the world-famous Great Migration, Rekero is in prime position. Overlooking the Talek River in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, the camp sits next to a main crossing point used by the wildebeest on their epic annual journey.

Guests can watch the herd make this perilous crossing without even leaving the camp. Enjoy this and other wildlife sightings from the comfort of your riverside tent or from one of the two communal decks.

Day 6 - 8 : Masai Mara

Wake up to the morning call of birds and the talkative snorts, barks and brays of the neighbourhood zebra. Enjoy one final delicious breakfast on the deck, overlooking the Talek River before you bid farewell to the team.

Your game drive transfer will take you to Naboisho Camp in the nearby Mara Naboisho Conservancy. Learn from your guide about the unique conservation model of the conservancies, where wildlife and local communities have found a balance to exist in harmony. Naboisho offers exceptional game viewing opportunities as well as a wide variety of activities, including walking safaris and visits to one of the Maasai communities and one of Asilia’s partners, the Maa Trust.

A luxurious boutique camp refurbished in 2023, Naboisho offers nine spacious and stylish tents featuring king-size or twin beds, large en suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor hot showers and flushing toilets. All tents feature a private veranda from which you can relax, enjoy hot beverages early in the morning, and soak in the tranquil savannah views. It is a beautiful camp environment for avid wildlife enthusiasts. Along with cheetah, elephant, and giraffe, the area boasts one of Africa’s highest concentrations of lion.

Naboisho Camp

There are nine spacious tents at Naboisho Camp. And because it’s based in a private conservancy adjacent to the Masai Mara National Reserve, Naboisho is one of the best camps for your safari in the Mara, known for its amazing guiding. A Kenyan safari at Naboisho goes beyond the usual game drives. Explore the Mara on foot, keep your eyes peeled on a night drive or spend an unforgettable night camping in the bush for a real safari adventure. With 266 species of birds to spot, there are also ample birdwatching opportunities.

Day 9 - Day of Departure

After a final breakfast on the lawn, game drive to the airstrip for your light aircraft flight back to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, where an Asilia driver and vehicle will transfer you to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight.
