Mount Gahinga Lodge opened in 1997 and was the first lodge of the Volcanoes Safaris collection. It is the perfect base to go gorilla tracking on the Ugandan side of the Virungas, track the rare golden monkey, climb a volcano, walk through local villages and most of all to share the culture of the Batwa, the oldest inhabitants of the Central African rain forest.
The charming property, inspired by traditional design and building techniques, has been re-imagined in 2019: the lounge, dining room, and gardens have been remodeled, and two new deluxe bandas have been launched.
The luxury bandas reflect the magic of the aesthetic traditions of the Bufimbira people, with their distinct colours. Each Banda has an ensuite luxury shower room, fireplace and private porch.

Located in Buvungira Cell of Bushekeri Sector of Nyamasheke district of the Western Province of Rwanda, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel is owned by a Rwandese entrepreneur and conservationist. In operation since February 2011, the hotel is composed of two distinct compartments. The main area consists of a large, two-tiered rondavel (see photo below) with a phenomenally high roof. Although a rondavel is usually a traditionally built round house, this building offers a rather more modern take on the theme. The ground floor, where you find the reception, is furnished with a few modern angular sofas and walls adorned with traditional Rwandan murals.Circular wicker lights hang from the ceiling and dark tiled stairs lead you up to a mezzanine balcony. Whereas the basement cubicle hosts administration offices, the reception, kitchen, store and the laundry, it is the second level that hosts dining area and the bar both with tables and chairs set on a rather out-of-place black-tiled floor and a sweeping veranda with all-weather tables and chairs of steel and moulded materials. The views from here are stunning and on clear days you can even see Lake Kivu and the volcanoes of far North Rwanda and the Eastern of Democratic Republic of Congo. The bar on this level is entirely decorated from bottle tops, giving it a bright but simple look.
As the names suggests Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel is built on the top of one of the hills positioning it to have the most beautiful views in the Nyungwe Forest area. Located five minutes drive off a main road, uphill, the hotel has 12 cottages arranged into two rows, one at the sunrise and the other at the sunset side. On each side, there is a row of six red-brick cottages ranged northward. Each of these double or twin cottages houses a lounge area at the front, with terracotta-tiled floors, sofa, chair and coffee table, and a fireplace which can be lit for you on cold evenings. The bedrooms are quite sparse, furnished with a bed, hanging space for clothes, hair dressing table and amazing well decorated spacious and clean bathroom.

Nestled in a small village outside the town of Kinigi, the Amakoro Songa Lodge is a genuine blend of conservation and tourism. Its eight luxurious cottages are designed and built to take advantage of its serene surroundings which give every visitor a chance to escape everyday life and a sense of tranquility.
Amakoro Songa Lodge gets its name from the black volcanic rocks that characterize this mountainous part of Rwanda that is home to the Mountain Gorillas. The lodge is set on a seven-acre plot with beautifully manicured lawns, surrounded by the Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabinyo mountain volcanoes.
All the cottages at Amakoro Songa Lodge are intentionally furnished with rustic elegance, fusing local and modern pieces that create a good warmth and comfort. The spacious rooms, each equipped with a fireplace, allow guests to opt for a post-trekking massage. Our ‘must-experience’ outdoor fireplace is not to be missed and it allows guests to enjoy an evening drink while watching the traditional Intore Dance Troupe.
When it comes to our cuisine, Amakoro Songa Lodge is big on “try local” when it comes to our cuisine. Our chefs grow their spices and organic vegetables in our gardens and are able to cater to the tastes of the world. The carefully recruited staff includes some from the local community who will be at hand to provide you with authentic local hospitality and knowledge of the area.
Guests get to visit the villages that neighbour the lodge and take part in traditional activities like tree planting, community cleaning and traditional dancing. The Lodge organises community walks that include home visits and a story moment with the oldest resident who shares stories dating back to pre and post-colonial times. The community walks always end with a picnic and a private moment for the guests to enjoy nature.
The primary activity at the Lodge is, without a doubt, Gorilla trekking. Amakoro Songa Lodge is the closest lodge to the Park Headquarters where the adventure begins making it very convenient for our guests, given the very early start required for trekking. After your undoubtedly unforgettable experience meeting humans’ closest relatives, a reinvigorating foot massage awaits. Whether you are looking for adventure through mountain climbing, cycling and bird watching or looking for relaxation and rediscovering your inner self, Amakoro Songa Lodge is the place to be.
